Foodscapes are the interconnected social, ecological, economic, and political environments that shape how food is produced, accessed, and consumed. Foodscapes play a critical role in child wellbeing, public health, and planetary resilience.

This panel brings together experts in child nutrition and wellbeing, agroecology, and food systems and policy, to explore how foodscapes influence outcomes across scales, from individual children and households to landscapes and global food systems.

Panelists, Kate Mackenzie, Dr. Rachel Bezner-Kerr, Dr. Pamela Koch, Jodi Hill-Lilly, and Haile Johnston, will examine how early-life nutrition is shaped by food environments, agricultural practices, and climate pressures, highlighting inequities in access to healthy, culturally appropriate, and sustainable foods.

Through interdisciplinary dialogue, the panel aims to reframe foodscapes not merely as sites of consumption, but as dynamic systems where policies, practices, and power structures intersect, shaping nutritional outcomes, environmental sustainability, and climate resilience. The session will offer insights for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers seeking integrated strategies to improve child wellbeing while advancing equitable and sustainable food systems.

This session was developed in partnership with the Wright-Ingraham Institute, which led the background research and will facilitate the panel discussion.
